SXSW 2021
Soldiers and Nerds Modernizing the Government
Description:
What happens when you bring together soldiers and a swat team of nerds to modernize national defense from the inside-out? Hannah Hunt, the first Chief Innovation Officer at the Army Futures Command (AFC) leads a soldier-led software factory based in Austin, TX. Their mission is to build software with industry, embracing one motto: “for soldiers, by soldiers." Meanwhile, Katie Olson, Deputy Director, DDS leads a “swat team of nerds” from the private sector to bolster national defense, following one of five values: “Design with users, not for them.” Both Katie and Hannah will lead a women-in-leadership mentor session to share insights from within AFC and DDS on how they are flipping the script on how hardware and software is designed and developed from within government for the digital age
