SXSW 2020

Next Generation “Therapeutacists” = MD + Robot

Description:

Here the future of Medicine as a skill, science, art and practice will be revealed! Traditionally we think of physician as either surgeon or internist - one who cuts, one who dispenses drugs. This division is blurring. Advances in minimally invasive techniques, robotics, image guidance, drug delivery technologies are all beginning to synergize. This has led to softening of hard-line division of disciplines. Physician-engineer experts who have designed cutting edge robotic and catheter technologies discuss and outline the new hybrid physician emerging, the “Next Generation Therapeutacist”, trained and skillful at using the most appropriate and effective approach – a combination of minimally invasive, open and NOTES (Natural Orifice) access to treat, reducing pain and hospitalization.

Takeaways

  1. Medicine classically created hard divisions of approaches to therapy as either: surgeon vs. internist/pediatrician – these boundaries are eroding.
  2. Robotics, minimally invasive techniques, enhanced image guidance, local drug delivery, and artificial intelligence are converging to alter therapy.
  3. Next generation physicians will be disease problem solvers – “Therapeuticists” – utilizing a synergy of approaches to provide best clinical solutions.
