SXSW 2020

Designing to Combat Disposability Culture

Description:

We live in a culture of disposability. Plastic straws, IKEA tables, last summer’s trendy crop top - these things are actually designed to be thrown away. Our retail economy is fueled by a rapid cycle of “new and improved” - we produce, they purchase, we produce something better, they toss + repurchase. But do the economic rewards outweigh the environmental impact? Or might the alternative of selling products designed to last reap just as much success? This panel will bring together a new crop of consumer startups addressing disposability culture through design, planned obsolescence, and circular retail.

Takeaways

  1. Fast fashion, fast furniture, and the culture around disposability is wreaking havoc on our environment - and we’ve got the landfill stats to prove it
  2. Consumer consciousness about how it’s made, where it’s from, and what the environmental impact is has never been higher.
  3. Innovation, planned obsolescence, and circular retail can combat disposability culture and result in profit at the same time.
