SXSW 2020
Designing to Combat Disposability Culture
Description:
We live in a culture of disposability. Plastic straws, IKEA tables, last summer’s trendy crop top - these things are actually designed to be thrown away. Our retail economy is fueled by a rapid cycle of “new and improved” - we produce, they purchase, we produce something better, they toss + repurchase. But do the economic rewards outweigh the environmental impact? Or might the alternative of selling products designed to last reap just as much success? This panel will bring together a new crop of consumer startups addressing disposability culture through design, planned obsolescence, and circular retail.

Takeaways
- Fast fashion, fast furniture, and the culture around disposability is wreaking havoc on our environment - and we’ve got the landfill stats to prove it
- Consumer consciousness about how it’s made, where it’s from, and what the environmental impact is has never been higher.
- Innovation, planned obsolescence, and circular retail can combat disposability culture and result in profit at the same time.
