SXSW 2020

Using Science Fiction to Inspire Innovation

Description:

SciFiD.I.: Science Fiction Design Intelligence, is a method for disruptive innovation created by the design team at SU Labs. This exercise encourages participants to predict the future by actively creating it. Many breakthroughs have been inspired by science fiction in this way. It’s no coincidence that Motorola’s highest selling device, the clamshell phone, looked remarkably similar to Roddenberry’s Star Trek communicator. Steve Jobs was so inspired by Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, that he spent nearly his whole career building tablets exactly like the ones in the film. It also led him to develop Apple’s Siri a much more benevolent version of HAL. HAL and Siri both inspired Spike Jonze's movie “Her’, a story about a life-like AI assistant and a lonely man. Takeaways

  1. Science Fiction storytelling is a great way to suspend our disbelief about the future and imagine what the world might be like in the 15+ years.
  2. Narrative is a powerful tool for getting alignment around a vision. Through story, we get people to care about and remember our vision of the future.
  3. SciFi has a long history of inspiring innovation and this future back design approach is used today to create new ideas and a roadmap to the future.
