Publishing is the currency of the music industry. According to NMPA member statistics, in 2018, annual US music publishing revenues hit $3.33bn, up 11.78% year-on-year. The opportunities for independent songwriters and publishers have expanded as well as the fight for their protection. From the rise of digital platforms and DSPs in exploiting the works of songwriters and publishers, to the importance of metadata, and to the passing and institution of the Music Modernization Act, this panel looks at the importance of publishing in an ever-changing industry, its importance to the bottom line within the independent music community of songwriters and publishers, the role of digital platforms and DSPs, and publishing's growing influence among the film, television, and advertising industries.
