SXSW 2020

Representation without categorization

Description:

Journeys of gender transition are as unique as each individual’s gender identity.  Current paradigms in healthcare and media are not equipped for this type of multi-faceted diversity and we must redefine gender from fixed and binary to multiple models informed by social theory and lived experience. Taking a wide-breadth of stories across age, racial identity, and economic background, we can change industry practices and beliefs to accurately reflect individually-lived experiences of gender.

  1. Can we ideate digital resources for self-education on gender transitions that are non-normative and focus on individual elements of transition?
  2. How can apps such as transtime improve representation and contribute to an individual's ownership of their trans experience and resulting data?
  3. How can we imagine to improve empathy and widen understanding for medical professionals charged with the care of people undergoing gender transition?
