SXSW EDU 2020
Giving Refugee Teens a "Future Self"
Description:
Only two percent of international aid is devoted to education and most of that is for young children or adults. There are few options for teenagers. Hello Future is working to fill this gap by providing refugee teens with the technology and on-site workshops to build their digital skills. Through a photography exhibition that took place during one such workshop in the Arbat Camp in Iraqi Kurdistan, we will see how teens' sense of self changes when they are offered such opportunities to learn.

Takeaways
- The current refugee narrative focuses on what these people have lost, rather than their desire to reclaim their self-identity and their sense of hope.
- When refugee teens are provided with digital literacy skills, they can rebuild their future and pursue education and employment opportunities.
- Capturing photographs of refugees' "Future Self" and what they want to pursue shows the change that happens when provided digital literacy skills.
