SXSW 2020

CRAB MENTALITY 2.0 – HOW NEW MEDIA IS DIVIDING US

Description:

The metaphor of the crab mentality refers to crabs in a bucket. When one
crab is trying to get out of the bucket, the others will always pull it back in. This phenomenon is used to describe the mindset of jealous individuals and groups: “If I can’t have it, neither can you.” With new media channels being a central part of our lives now we can see that the situation grows even more problematic: mobbing, shitstorms, slut- and body shaming – new media enables people to join any conversation and express their opinions on anything and anybody. So although technology is supposed to help us make smarter decisions and bring us closer together we can see that in many cases it is rather dividing than uniting our society. What can we do to put the SOCIAL back in social media? Let’s discuss.
