SXSW 2020
Retreat digitally or risk losing everything
Description:
With app-enabled ease, we can order amazing food, take a road trip without missing a turn, and even entertain our young kids in a mundane situation. But what are we giving up in exchange for relying on those conveniences?
Maybe we’ve forgotten how to cook dinner for our family or create and build with our hands—have we even considered helping the coming generation navigate the trappings and pitfalls of digital life?
Perhaps it’s time to take a step back from digital to invest in skills and recall values lost in the groundswell of digital evolution. If the “human + machine” paradigm is here to stay, replacing humanity with technology can no longer be acceptable. This session will focus on finding our way back to what makes our species great.

Takeaways
- Comfort and speed offered by digital in daily life are not (and cannot be) enemies of a distinguished, very personal "mark" everybody should leave.
- Whatever digital adds to our life, we should always run the last mile with our best human skills and values in order not to betray ourselves
- We know the "on/off" scheme since ever, from lamps to laptops. But what if the "button" doesn't work? We should know what's behind the ease of digital
