SXSW 2020
A Car ‘Hit’ Me 20 Times: VR For Risky Business
Description:
In demanding career environments, book learning often falls short. Inherently dangerous situations become more treacherous when people are learning on the job, encountering the situation for the first time.
In such careers, VR-simulated trainings pack powerful potential. For example, until recently, highway patrol officers received training through video, textbook and slow-speed simulations before receiving field assignments. Now, untethered, VR-based training allows officers to practice the routine elements of a traffic stop while learning to protect themselves in a number of unpredictable scenarios.
This session explores how VR experiences create new memory paths in the brain that lead to calmer responses and the potential life-saving impact of such training in high-risk jobs.
