SXSW 2020

A Future Without Plastic

Description:

One million plastic bottles are bought every bottle around the world — and that number will top half a trillion by 2021. Less than half of those bottles end up getting recycled. Hear from a few millennial founders who are coming up with alternatives to plastic and figuring out steps to save our oceans and planet including Cove's 25 year old British CEO and Founder Alex Totterman, who released the first fully biodegradable water bottle, which will will break down into CO₂, water, and organic waste. This process can take place in compost, a landfill and even in the ocean.

Takeaways

  1. Plastic pollution poses one of the biggest threats to our way of life. It takes thousands of years to fully break down, leaching toxic chemicals.
  2. Globally, we buy 1m plastic water bottles per min. Using refillable bottles is ideal, but focusing on them for a problem of this scale is naive.
  3. If we can replace plastic bottles with bottles that are more like orange peels or flowers than petroleum-derived plastic, we can end the pollution.
