SXSW 2020

Practical Privacy, It's More Than Just Security

Description:

Data privacy and security are significant issues being discussed in the media, policy debates, and by industry leaders. It's not uncommon to hear the terms used interchangeably, while in reality they refer to related but distinct concepts. While some policy makers and experts may understand these concepts, many data users and data generators do not have a solid grasp of the issues. Consumers are expected to consent to having their data collected, used, and shared without understanding the implications and risks. Data users should protect users from harm by using data in a secure and appropriate way, but not all have expertise in the risks and challenges of managing data.

This talk will define privacy, security and related concepts and provide a practical framework for discussion.
