SXSW 2019

Changing Tech Culture Through Story

Description:

Over the last 10 years, ‘super geniuses’ have been sensationalized and associated with tech. The idea of the $1b unicorn has created a level intensity in tech that we haven’t seen before, an intensity that a male engineering manager at Uber told me sometimes allows leadership teams to compromise their ethics and what many women have told me doesn’t feel like an inclusive and productive way to innovate. But how do we begin to change an entire industry’s culture? Building culture within our own companies is challenging enough. What happens when we try to shift an entire industry’s culture? This session will focus on the power of story in changing culture, including examples from history and opportunities for attendees to contribute to the change.

Takeaways

  1. The needle isn't moving on diversity in tech because the culture hasn't changed - yet.
  2. There is hard evidence that story has the power to change behavior and collectively change culture.
  3. By constructing compelling stories of men and women in tech, we can change tech culture and attract the necessary talent to build the future.
