The new geography of the music world

Will the next Rolling Stones be from Brazil?

Is internet music technology enhancing the ability of artists and labels to reach a global audience of music fans? Or are they simply giving labels a new way of reaching the mass market with established acts?

Axel Dauchez, CEO of the global music streaming service Deezer, Scott Cohen from digital distribution company The Orchard and Claudio Vargas, VP of Digital for Sony Music Brazil join one of this year’s most exciting emerging international artists to discuss how both geographical boarders and barriers to music distribution are shifting with the evolution of music industry online.

The panel will address the pros and cons of bringing music beyond the traditional western markets that once dominated the industry; the reasons why change is necessary and how developing markets and their artists might offer the key to the future of the industry.

Questions Answered

  1. Has the evolution of online music services helped or hindered emerging international artists?
  2. What are the traditional barriers to music distribution? What are the solutions that music services can offer to artists?
  3. Why do artists such as Thom Yorke argue that music streaming services are bad for emerging artists? What are the arguments for and against?
  4. What artists this year have broken the global barrier and why? Are there any commonalities in the reasons why they've succeeded on a global platform?
  5. Given the vast changes we've seen over the last year in the industry, what do you predict for the next few years?
