SXSW 2023

Striving for Diversity in the Lab and Genetic Data

Description:

Ten years ago, researchers believed they could uncover all possible genetic mysteries using the genes of a small group of people in Iceland. Groundbreaking discoveries were made, but it is impossible that the genes of a small subset of Europeans could hold every genetic secret. Massive discoveries still wait to be found in the smallest building blocks of life. To see all the possibilities among uncountable variations, a wide, diverse net is needed. But the question of variation goes beyond data – a diverse research team provides insight from varying cultures and experiences. Jeff Reid and Lyndon Mitnaul will discuss their focus on creating a genetic research team and facility like no other, and why diversity in both the data and the laboratory drive their unique and successful approach.

Takeaways

  1. Genetic discoveries are waiting, and global collaborations with access to enormous amounts of genetic data are the best chance for those discoveries.
  2. Advancements in the technology used to study genetic material fuels the ability to now study diverse genetic data in a way not previously possible.
  3. Different backgrounds and world views lead to new ideas and questions. This is true for both social and scientific progress. Labs need more diversity.
