Outsourcing 2.0: Is the World Flat or Not?

Your vote:

Type:
Panel
Category:
Business / Entrepreneurial
Presenter:
Chris Schultz, Flatsourcing, Inc.
Description:
Are you building a killer web app or the next great Internet startup? You’ve considered outsourcing… but heard about the headaches. Come see four outsourcing experts share insights on collaborating across borders and time zones, avoiding project death spiral, and how smart startups are leveraging a global strategy that VC’s expect.
We think you'll enjoy this panel. We've got some great panelists lined up: * Sandeep Sood – http://monsoonco.com/ – Sandeep is in Berkley with teams in India. He authors the Doubsourcing comic (recently featured in WSJ) and sends his apologies to Thomas Friedman that he believes the world is not yet flat in Forbes. http://www.linkedin.com/in/sandeepsood * Qasim Mueen – http://www.zigron.com/ – Qasim is in Pittsburgh with teams in Pakistan. He is the co-founder and CEO of Zigron. http://www.linkedin.com/in/zigron * Andrea Azdril – http://startechglobal.com/ – Andrea is Los Angeles with development in Beijing, China. She is the CEO and frequently travels back and forth from China. http://www.linkedin.com/pub/1/096/35a * Chris Schultz – http://flatsourcing.com – I am in New Orleans and our development team in Kazan, Russia. I am working to shape our organization into a Ruby on Rails firm with a retainer-based model. http://www.linkedin.com/in/cbschultz I think that this group can really facilitate a worthwhile discussion about outsourcing based on our diverse experiences. We hope you agree. Vote for us! Thanks.
Here are some of the types of questions we'll be working through: - How can I screen outsourcing firms to find one I can trust will get the job done? - Where should I be looking? India, China, Russia, Pakistan? - What communication methods work best for outsourcing? - Why should I be looking at outsourcing if I want to get funded? - Can I outsource fully, or do I need a US-based project manager? - How do I find the right outsourcing firm? - Will outsourcing cost me my job? How can I leverage this trend to make myself more employable? - How should I prepare to successfully outsource my project? - What common outsourcing mistakes should I be aware of? - How does the cost and time frame of outsourcing compare to hiring my own in-house team? - How do I evaluate outsourcing options based on my in-house expertise-or lack thereof? - How should I compare outsourcing options? (based on project type, deadlines, and client time/resources to invest in the process) - What does “low cost” really mean? Evaluating hourly cost, total cost, ROI, etc. - How do I evaluate pricing models based on my needs, requirements, & resources? - Is it possible to build a long-term relationship, or even a global partnership with an overseas development team? - Is cost savings the only reason to outsource?

I run a small dev shop. I can't wait to hear about this panel's experience with outsourcing and as many answers to the questions chris has posted above. The discussions this panel will brew up among the attendees could get rowdy.

You can resist the change or embrace it- globalization has enabled equality and reduced disparities across the world. Why should a talented developer in India be denied to work- when he is half the cost and time that your team is offering? You are one and the same: humans, husbands, wives, and people. Embrace globalization or be swallowed in the same enthocentricity that you propel.

I'm an small business owner who is only starting to understand this concept. In some way, I'm an "LD" - learning disabled - about the opportunities that outsourcing can offer. I hope to get rid of my "LD" at this seminar - can't wait!

I'm a one man shop. I'd like to know what the startup costs would be for starting to offshore development and/or maintenance. I'd be more interested in the larger TCO for the relationship versus the specific project being developed.

Seems like every person that i've spoken to who's involved in some type of consulting company, small or large IT shop or web 2.0 start up has brought up international and local outsourcing at one time or another, lets hear more about this!
