From Blog to Book Deal: How-To

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Pamela Slim, Escape from Cubicle Nation
Description:
Is traditional publishing dead? Apparently not, as many bloggers are landing book deals that extend and enhance their online work. Learn the ins and outs from bloggers who have done it including how to shape a coherent book from tons of posts and involve your readers in your writing.
Questions
Answered:
  1. What are traditional publishers looking for in blog-to-book deals?
  2. How does having a blog change the traditional publishing model, both for publishers and writers?
  3. How is writing a book different from writing a blog?
  4. If you're writing a blog first, how much of the blog should end up in the book, how much to leave out?
  5. What are the advantages of adding a book to your portfolio of work?
  6. How can you involve your blog readers in the writing of your book?
  7. What comes first, platform than book deal or book deal then platform?
  8. How can you ensure that your book and revenue are optimized for digital distribution?
  9. What does it take realistically to write a book?
  10. Why do some blog-based books fail? (e.g. The Gawker Guide to Conquering All Media)

This looks great. I see so many of my fellow bloggers on book jackets and I always wondered how it happened - were they discovered? Did they knock on doors? Did they right proposals?

Plus, Hugh is fabulous - probably the most quoted guy in our industry. Never before has one man's work appeared on so many PowerPoints.

I'd certainly attend this panel, especially since I'm hearing that, contrary to what many might think, you can't just dump a bunch of blog posts in a pile and call it a book. Would love to hear how it's done, from the pros.

The topic is moderately interesting, but the panelists are really the big sell

Agree with Jerry Hilts, this panel could talk about anything and it would be worth it.

Echoing Nathan & Jerry--killer lineup.

Would love to see all these folks together--great panel idea!

I'd like to see Penelope Trunk up there, too. Even a younger, Millenial type, like Dan Schawbel.

Hi there, for anyone who is just making it to this panel description and does not see the names of other presenters besides myself: I developed this proposal with Hugh McLeod of Gaping Void, Ariel Waldman and Kathy Sierra (Creating Passionate Users), so they are very hot to speak on this topic. In my earlier description, I included their names, which is not part of panel picker protocol.

I really appreciate the suggestions for other presenters. Penelope would be great -- she is a friend and has a great story about her own experience with Brazen Careerist.

Since I am currently RIGHT in the middle of finishing my own blog-to-book project (Escape from Cubicle Nation, due to publisher Sept. 15), I can tell you there are many things I have learned that I would now do differently, if I could turn back time!

Thanks for your vote, and please bring on the comments with topics you would like to see covered in this session.

All the best,

-Pam

This would be a tremendously great panel, and I would attend just for this.

This does sound great. I look forward to hearing what the panel will have to share.

I was just discussing this topic over the weekend. Publishing is evolving and bloggers have changed the rules about who is a recognized "expert" to discuss topics in this world. I think think this would be a great panel.

I am currently negotiating a book deal and publish a considerable amount online so this topic is spot on for me.

I see the physical publication as a sign-post to virtual material that organically grows the content which can then feed further physical production as demand requires.

Half of the first volume in my case will be crowd-sourced/co-authored and linking to pod/vod/blog content so I see it all to be part of a mix and mash.

Thanks to Armano for the tip-off tweet

I definitely would like to see this one, especially with such notable panelists.

I think blogging will play a big part in the evolution of publishing. It will be fascinating to learn how these stars leveraged the blog to book.
on 29/8/08
I'll be there. Been thinking about turning one of my blogs into a book.

Pam is a phenomenal entrepreneur, and I'd love to hear her thoughts on publishing!

Very interesting discussion, thank you

I feel offline publications will always be popular and complement work done online. There will be crossovers like the kindle, but reading books is something definitely something deep down in our lives.

It will be great to hear Pam speak on this subject.
