Description:
Everyone knows that social media has created a revolution in marketing. But aren't most marketers missing the point about what social media can or cannot do for them? This panel will expose the horrible lies and deceptions surrounding social media marketing. You will know what social media is and isn't.

Hey folks. Just a few words about this panel - it grew out of ideas following my panel from last year. So I'm hoping we can gather everyone back together - that's Deb Schultz, Tara Hunt, Jeremiah Owyang, Chris Heuer, Brian Oberkirch and Hugh MacLeod. Or some combination thereof.

We're hoping this can be about what social media is and isn't. But more about what it isn't. It isn't a cure-all for bad marketing, it isn't a lever you can pull and get instant community, and it isn't a substitute for real human marketing.

So if you like these ideas, and want to see us do our thing, please vote for us. And I promise we'll do the wave again.

Interesting Dave. I've spent the last few years working with PR firms. Can't wait to get your POV.

Seems like a natural extension, since most people's responses to what social media is, is so convoluted

Love the title, Dave. It sucked me right in . . .Are you going to post anything on the presentation AFTER the fact? Addressing MYTHS about a topic is always a great draw so I'm sure it'll make good fodder for further conversation everywhere. Good luck explaining it all in 60 minutes or less . . .

i'll be there.

we also toyed with "nothing you know about social media is right" but felt it was too confrontational - unmarketing is too much last year and marketing 2.0 was already taken (not that we would want it to describe what we do) - more then just a continuation of "self-replicating awesomeness", our panel last year, we will get into the misconception of social media and especially the intimacy with which it is placed next to marketing, even though being social has little to do with marketing... I wrote a post on this over at chrisheuer.com called Toward a More Social Organization...
