In our industry we call it "coopetition" (see wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coopetition), but yeah, I'm a huge fan of the concept... Problem is it only really works as far as you can trust someone.

As a start-up, you need to collaborate to move fast enough and move your business far enough along so that it's harder for industry incumbents to squash you.
