Description:
When NY Times covered blogger Om Malik's heart attack, it was a wake-up call to Web 2.0 community about our lifestyle. Is being 'plugged in' destroying our health? We beg to differ. Consider using the internet for fitness! This panel will debate which next generation technologies are helpful in 'exercising the web.'

I'm honored to be co-planning this session with Biray, and it's great to see your early feedback!! Here's an expanded session description with some additional detail and we welcome your feedback and ideas! ## Let's face it, most of us in the Web 2.0 community lead a non-stop lifestyle, with jobs that keep us plugged in 24/7, online, time-starved and sedentary. And that could be killing us. Literally. When Internet famous blogger Om Malik suffered a heart attack December 28, it was a wake up call that he needed to change his non-stop unhealthy lifestyle. "Living a healthier life isn't just one of my New Year's resolutions," Malik wrote. "It's doctor's orders." We know we should be taking better care of ourselves. We might even know a few things we could be doing. But how to get started? And how to keep it going with all the demands on our time? In this highly participatory session, discover how Web 2.0 platforms and technologies can help us achieve our health and fitness goals. Gain insights from expert panelists about the most important things you can do right now to get the best results in the least amount of time. Discuss real life practical examples: what works, and what doesn't work. Discover the keys to feeling better, looking great, having more energy. Be inspired by your fellow Web 2.0 friends and colleagues. Is a heart attack in YOUR future? Could be… Don't wait for doctor's orders, learn how to make positive lifestyle changes now and how to get fit with the help of Web 2.0 technologies.

Great idea for a panel. My day job is promoting walking, and I have become very interested in the use of tech in this - particularly with geo-web (meatspace/cyberspace overlap) being the next big thing. Things such as geocaching, pacmanhattan and mediascapes are a great way of encouraging physical activity with a tech bent, but I think there is also the opportunity for more cross over in the other direction. By using social networks to encourage more walking and physical activity. Already there is the Fitbug system with fantasy footfall leagues, but there is so much more that could be done! I really hope this comes off!

Who would you like to see on this panel? Tim Ferriss? Robert Scoble? Om Malik? Chris Brogan? Jose Castilla? Others?

Great panel idea!

Yes, I totally agree with you Biray, this is an excellent panel idea and well overdue for visibility. While I'm no Web 2.0 expert (twitterphobic!), I hope you liked the kit demo'd at the retreat last week. I wonder how many Web 2.0 aspects are mentioned in the youtube "How to Keep Fit with Your Computer" and if it can help this cause? See you in the UK!

the game angle can definitely provide that extra little motivation to participate in a fitness program if it adds a competitive or collaborative element. This would be an interesting talk.

Go for it, Biray. I will be there.

I only wish that just showing up at the panel would make me healthier. Kind of important stuff, eh?

The internet has fabulous information about health, lifestyle and fitness. There are numerous site I check out to create my own personal workout routines. We must remember that we have to make healthy lifestyle choices and the internet is one resource for access to information. We mut also connect with self awareness so we can be in tune with our health.

@Barbara Faison You're right, there is so much information available and so many tools! We're aiming to have a panel discussion about what tools works - and with so many demands on our time, the 20% to focus on to drive the 80% results. We'd love to hear more about which sites you use to create your own personal workout routines!
