Holly Ross, NTEN
Description:
Successful nonprofits using social media are masters of social change behind the firewall. This panel shares best practices through stories from nonprofit institutions and examines how to get past resistance, uncooperative IT departments, and skepticism from management to reap the power of social media for social change beyond the firewall.

We can all do more together than alone and this session shows us how. Fantastic!

Beth Kanter and Holly Ross were kind enough to ask me to be on this panel. Besides myself this panel is going to feature some great non-profits giving you the straight up truth on how they are implementing their Social Media Strategies. No theory here. This is real world implementation from behind the iron curtain.

This would be extremely useful and might help IT get out the dark realm. Way behind the times and really ties the hands of inhouse advocates, supporters and designers.

David Neff is one fun mofo. Can't wait.

David didn't mention the communist themed costumes we're going to wear
on 12/8/08
Love it! Should be a great conversation!
on 13/8/08
This is what I'm looking for. I don't want more theory -- I want to be able to point to something and be able to jump up and down and say "see, it works! it works!"
on 26/8/08
Ooh! This is great! I can probably add a number of war stories. We're still struggling a bit but I believe have crossed the tipping point.
on 28/8/08
Sounds like a good bunch to me.
on 29/8/08
I could sure use tips for dealing with social media resistance, working with nonprofit clients and social change orgs -- I could see this panel being *huge* and super useful!
on 29/8/08
This sounds great... Dave and his costumes always add to the appeal.

We're currently doing some pro-bono work for a nonprofit in this area. May have some data to share and will be publishing a white paper on it.

Social media is an incredibly powerful tool for nonprofits, and NOT just because it's "free." Plus, David Neff is a compelling speaker!
very helpful thanks!

Microsoft calls it Townsquare. Deloitte hosts D Street. IBM has its Beehive, and Best Buy its BlueShirt Nation. No, it’s not a real estate explosion. In industries from retail to high-tech, banking and manufacturing, companies are increasingly building networks behind the firewall where employees can create profiles and connect with one another in ways first demonstrated by LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace. “The whole Web 2.0 explosion has moved from the consumer and college student world to professionals in the business world,” says Amy Shuen, author of Web 2.0: A Strategy Guide (O’Reilly Media, 2008). “Employees are seeing this as a way of enlarging their sphere and interacting with colleagues.” It’s more than an electronic water cooler, she says. Companies may start with the idea of helping employees feel more connected, but that’s just the beginning. With easier and faster connections among people, suddenly crossdivision collaboration happens more naturally, leading to greater innovation. “People don’t just chat; they connect with people and end up talking about things that have an impact on the business,” Shuen says. Forrester Research agrees that 2008 is a time of rapid adoption of internal social networking, citing software suites that include social networking features, such as Awareness’s Enterprise Social Media, Jive Software’s Clearspace, IBM’s Lotus Connections and Microsoft’s SharePoint. Here are three companies that are already seeing benefits from early adoption of internal social networking.
