Shift Happens: Moving from Words to Pictures

Tom Crawford, VizThink
Description:
People are hardwired for visualization yet we rely significantly on text. Most games, graphic novels, magazines, interfaces, IKEA instructions, and many other forms of communication take advantage of people’s natural visual thinking ability. Panelists will discuss how to leverage visual techniques to improve your games, websites, movies, communications, or presentations.
on 8/8/08
The panel is scheduled to include: Dan Roam, author of Back of the Napkin (Currently #122 in books on Amazon); Dave Gray, Founder and Chairman of Xplane (a leading visual thinking company); Lee LeFever, Founder of Common Craft (authors of the wildly popular "In Plain English" podcast series); and expert visual facilitators and Austin natives Sunni Brown and Marilyn Martin.

Please don't schedule this great panel at the same time as Dr. Sketchy's panel or the fabulous Battledecks. I must see and record all of them. See my Live Art Blogging book from last year's SXSW Interactive at http://www.lulu.com/content/2242753

Okay, I'm biased since I'm on the panel, but anything with Dave Gray and Lee LeFever has to be good.

Written words have been a convenient way to encode and decode information for hundreds of years.. but we're finally at the point where the bandwidth limit to transmitting information no longer applies. There is so much to re-learn about how to express ideas using motion. Lee LaFever's work is brilliant.

Gifted panel, relevant and immediate topic... I am in!

Lee Rocks! All kinds of things suggest movement towards simple graphics instructions for consumer devices. There is nothing more joyous than seeing how little it takes in terms of user manuals for apple products

These are some of the most innovative explanations that are out there. They appeal to both young and old, techno savvy and newbies alike!

I have often used the work of folks on this panel (Lee in particular) to help move people in my field from our archaic self-presentation into something that approximates innovative design. CommonCraft has been a tremendous asset in one-on-one interaction for helping people to think differently about the tools they use.
on 20/8/08
Lee is awesome, would love to see this make it.

I'd go even if it was just Lee, but I would love to see this panel with all these sweet panelists!
on 20/8/08

Yes, yes, yes. Dave Gray and Dan Roam are awesome (saw both in action at the VizThink conference) and have recently become big fans of Common Craft.

Commoncraft all the way please - advanced back to basics!!

Commoncraft is one of the best things about the Internet! Lee LeFever is a HUGE talent and has made a huge impact on the way we communicate and share experiences.

This is a rad lineup for Visual Thinking.

Sounds like an interesting panel. I'd definitely check it out if it made it to the lineup.

Discussion of visualizations has been lacking in the past. This panel is a step in the right direction. -Eryn the iSchooler

This is a bridge to the future, a relevant technique for creating memory sync.

I would very interested in this topic as I have seen it in action with Sunni Brown from Bright Spot. I saw her work graphic recording magic and it made everyone who passed the office where these visuals were posted take a second look!
on 21/8/08
I am all right brain, and very interested to learn more about this process. I will definitely be in attendance for SXSW to see this panel in action!

I'm putting this on my list. I'm fascinated by alternative ways to present information, capture a dialogue, and tell a story. That's what this really is!
on 22/8/08
I was introduced to this visual means of capturing (for example) keynote main points at the International Coach Federation 3 years back and have been intrigued ever since. Austin is wonderfully fortunate to now have one of the foremost chapters of the International VizThink organization helping bring their concepts to us. I've seen the work of Sunni and Marilyn and want to see more plus more of that of others!

Really, I wasn't even thinking about going to sxsw until I saw that this panel was added to the line up. This would definitely be one of those sessions that fills up real fast and leaves tons of people jammed at the door trying to get in.

This panel should be great because of Sunni Brown and her company, BrightSpot Information Design. Having worked with Sunni and BrightSpot, I know they are innovative leaders in leveraging visual techniques and great contributors to the VizThink community in Austin. Marilyn Martin is "Rather Graphic" and a great part of the panel as well.

I just learned about this festival from Marilyn Martin & Sunni, who would be on the panel. I definitely think you should have this panel, since it features leading thinkers in the field from what I can tell. I bought Back of the Napkin recently, 'cause it looks great. Anyone working for a design-oriented business (and so many are these days) needs to seriously consider visual communication.
on 25/8/08
Absolutely have Tom and team facilitate a session. It's enlightening and useful for bot personal and professional application!
on 25/8/08
I think this is a great topic and deserves to be apart of the program.

Yes! My team does not understand text based training for our new environmental compliance software. I need ideas and help!

I can't tell you how much the Google Reader in Plain English video has helped me help other people I work with keep up to date.

As a an underground proponent of visual thinking, I'm a big believer in this topic. Imagery is everywhere yet there is not enough cogent and intelligent discussion about the critical role visualization plays in our lives.
Do it today!
