Description:
Poetry, Television, and Film all create immersive, evocative experiences through narrative conventions. We'll explore the conventions and tactics of these media, and how they directly apply to creating delightful, powerful user experience in interactive contexts. You'll never look at TV, film or interactive the same way again!

Hey! You! Thanks for stopping by and considering my presentation.

The concept for this presentation started at Jared Spool's Magic and Mental Models presentation at last years' SXSW, and continued at the Emerge blog: http://www.newmediabuzz.com/the_new_media_buzz_brough/2008/03/sxsw-postgame-m.html

I'm passionate about creating user experiences that are meaningful, and believe these concepts of narrative and manipulating the perception of space & time are key as we approach ubiquitous computing.

Most of all, I'm looking forward to having a room open at SXSW so that all the people interested in these concepts have a place to meet and share ideas. But why wait? Feel free to tweet me about this @mleis.

Thanks again. It will be an honor and a pleasure to present this topic at SXSW.

The recent Olympics clearly showed how much the web had to learn from the broadcast in terms of making truly immersive experiences. Would love to hear your thoughts on this!

Thanks for the comments everyone -- really nice to hear it from folks I respect so much.

Ming: to your point about the olympics, I think it's more an example of how far broadcasters still have to go, how much potential is there if you actually combined the media. Putting video on the Web is just that: using one medium to present another. How incredible is it when you combine the two? What if NBC gave you the ability to choose between events, see all the shots the technical director sees, and call your own shots? Now you're using a ton of footage they have paid for and never used, created your own broadcast, and have the ability to share that more personal video mix with friends. How freakin' powerful is that?!
Do it today!
