| Description | Tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors, hormonal therapies used to treat hormone+ breast cancer are proven to decrease recurrence rates by as much as 40%. An ASCO study released June 28, 2010 demonstrated that fewer than 50% of women complete the entire course of recommended treatment (generally 5 years). The lowest adherence rates were in women under 40, who may have a higher risk of recurrence simply because they have longer to live. The point is not whether or not a breast cancer survivor should take hormonal therapy, rather that a very large gap exists between the experience of taking the medication and the support needed to do so successfully. To address this gap, we are developing “What’s Best for Me,” a social media program that provides support, information and motivation for breast cancer survivors receiving hormonal therapy. It begins as a blog and will grow to include posts from survivors, clinical commentary, a peer supported forum, and aggregated feeds of hormonal therapy conversations on the social web. Data that will help HCPs and pharma improve adherence will be gathered to help improve health outcomes and generate income for further development. Advocacy and a passionate desire to help empower women for the best possible chance to beat cancer has led me to this compelling problem, and the desire to develop a solution. "What's Best for Me," would be a huge step forward. Thank you for your consideration. |
