| Description | Much has been made of the “Twitter Revolution” in Iran and the “text to save Haiti” campaigns. But does social media hold the key to world peace? Social media’s direct affect on conflict cannot be ignored. That being said, we also need to acknowledge that the “Twitter Revolution” wasn’t a universally-positive experience for Iranians, and Haiti still needs more than our money. In looking at social media’s effect on a world in conflict, we see what it means to pair embargoes and blogs, corruption and SIM cards, and the importance of knowing how conflict-related trending topics are replaced by Michael Jackson and Lindsay Lohan. Because social media is no longer a hyper-local experience, reporting through outlets like Twitter and Flickr has a direct impact on how the outside world views conflict, how those conflicts are resolved, and how we track public opinion. ‘Are you there Social Media? It’s me, Conflict’ brings together a diverse group of people including a rogue academic, a developer/social media consultant and an anti-establishment journalist to critically discuss the trends, misconceptions, future and even success of social media and conflict. We’ll call this discussion a success if you leave the room thinking: “Is there more to this story?”, “Am I guilty of Slack-tivism?” and “Maybe I shouldn’t believe everything Mashable says.” |
