| Description | Today, variations of the same AI technology used for tracking and identifying terrorist cells online and for diagnosing cancer are also at work offering up music, suggesting movies, and up-selling products. Sites like Pandora, Netflix, and Amazon have been building core offerings around recommendation engine technology for several years, but similar algorithms are now becoming more commonly used all across the web. Companies are flocking to recommendation technology to offer a more customized, personally-tailored experience. Widespread adoption of personalized recommendation technology might even become a threat to search engine usage. However, could an uncanny valley be emerging in personalization technology, causing consumers to feel uneasy about just how accurate and “real” predictions are? I’ll talk about how to make personalized recommendations better, why it pays to add a little human psychology to your algorithm, and what it took to win the Netflix prize. You'll learn how search engines are incorporating personalization technology and what you can do with the recently released Google Prediction API. I’ll also cover how this technology is currently used in advertising, ecommerce, and social media, and which applications will be adopting personal recommendation engines in the near future. |
