Organizer Samuel Pettyjohn Health Literacy Missouri
Description Health Literacy is defined as a user's ability to find and use health information properly. It is estimated that low health literacy costs the United States in upwards of 236 Billion dollars annually. Health literacy is one of the few fields in medicine that can directly benefit from creative design and programming simplify patient and doctor interactions, promote healthy activities, and make patients compliant with doctor's orders and prescription drugs. Health Literacy Missouri is currently the largest the largest community-based health literacy organization in the world. HLM strives to utilize the newest ideas in communication, technology, and design to improve the health of all Missourians. We have active interests across the country from the lowest tech (puppet shows) to the newest uses for smart phones in doctor patient interaction. We are looking to share our work so far so others can learn how to use their skills to help address the important topic of health literacy. We also wish to extend an invitation to the creative community of SXSW to develop partnerships and collaborations in developing the newest technological advances in health communication.
