Description:
Do technologists focus on what's cool, rather than what's useful? Does geek chic create an echo chamber? Is Web 2.0 an insider's game? This session explores status symbols in social media worlds (online reputation, net.celebrity, elite conferences, beta invites), inviting critical thinking about status, class, and elitism.

"Do technologists focus on what's cool, rather than what's useful?" Certainly some archetypal web 2.0 stylistic elements get confused as usability best practices, when really they are nothing more than just design trends. "Is Web 2.0 an insider's game?" I would say yes, because I feel Web 2.0 is currently treading on new ground, places where only early adopters exist. I would say (with a few exceptions) web 2.0 has failed to bring the general web populous up to speed with its benefits and practices. Many new web companies have been successful, but few have really answered old questions, instead creating new issues with newer answers.

Sounds like a good topic, and as in real life may well drive Web 2.0
