Title:

From Trolls to Stars: The Commenter Ecosystem

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Kate Miltner, NY Social Media Roundtable
Description:
This panel will explore the fascinating and often bizarre world of commenter culture. From trolls on 4chan to Star Commenters on Gawker Media blogs, panelists will discuss: - The nuances of commenter/blog symbiosis (including the benefit/detriment to the business side of ad-supported blogs) - The nature of commenter hierarchies - The sociology of self-policing/group determination of community standards of behavior - The implications of the shift from handle-based identities to real-world identities (Facebook Connect)
Questions
Answered:
  1. What is a troll?
  2. How do people become Star Commenters?
  3. Can the commenter population on a blog make it undesirable to advertisers?
  4. How come some commenters are more powerful/popular than others?
  5. How can the commenting community shape the editorial focus of a blog/publication?
  6. Is it better to clearly establish rules or to let commenters self-police?
  7. What happens when commenters self-police?
  8. How does commenting work on Gawker/Slashdot/MeFi etc?
  9. How is Facebook Connect going to change the nature of some of these commenter communities?
  10. As everything becomes more and more social, how is the definition (particularly within the social ecosystem of the internet) of being a commenter going to change?

Kate is a wonderful connector and an amazing moderator - her previous experience with the NY Social Media Roundtable (http://www.nysocialmediaroundtable.com) has brought some of NY technology's best and brightest together to have meaningful dialogue on some of the issues affecting social media today. I can't wait to see this panel.

Kate has organized well-attended panels on important social-media topics in NY and now is your chance to have one in Austin next year. I recommend you click "Yes".

This sounds great, I'm in.

Kate Miltner is it. #NYSMRT was great. I shudder like a little pup left out outdoors on a winter night when I think of braving the cold dark world of commentistas alone.

Vote yes for this panel. You really have no choice in this matter.

With Kate at the helm this panel could be both entertaining and enlightening. She knows the world of social networking like no one I've heard speak on it before. This panel is a must for anyone, like me, struggling to keep up in the changing world of networking and marketing to an online community.

Definitely yes! Kate is amazing!

Previous panels have all been simply excellent. Nothing but the utmost faith this would be more of the same awesomeness that has been on display in past NYSMR panel discussions. Plus, I fucking created a login AND am leaving a comment. Ironically, given my expressed excitement about this here panel, these are things I rarely do.

I am in favor of anything involving the comment economy.
on 19/8/09
Absolutely. This topic should certainly be in the program.

Great idea-- love it.

I will pretty much do whatever an email tells me to do, plus if Michael Orell endorses something I can't but help to oblige as well.

Kate does a tremendous job with NYSMRT, and you can be assured she will do a fantastic job with this panel.

Kate moderated two fantastic New York Social Media Roundtables this summer. In addition to the events being informative, fun and lively, both sold out of tickets well in advance of the event date. Count on me to attend any event envisioned by Kate -- it's always a treat.
