THIS was what SXSW was lacking last year.

I couldn't believe there was almost nothing related to the online adult industry, and nothing explicitly so that I could find. Thank you Nina, this panel would make me consider coming in 2010.
on 31/8/09
Hi!
Nina here saying thanks for taking a look at my SXSW panel proposal. This is new territory for me, but my experiences in adult entertainment over the past 25 years gives me some valuable insight into the minds of both consumers and producers of adult material. It's hardly surprising that the internet has had an enormous impact on both sides of the cash register, and the effects are still being felt.

I look forward to talking more about it and I hope to make it to SXSW in 2010!

In November 2001, Jenna Jameson swiftly and soundly won the debate, her side against "The House Believes that Porn is Harmful" for the Oxford Union debating society in the UK. She showcased, though her career's experience, her knowledge in a sophisticated and formal manner her side of the argument.

She's a legend, and you are, too.

And why not stand up and discuss the issue of the Internet and porn. Day by day, the Internet grows, expands and evolves. With it, entertainment, all facets of it--mainstream and adult--have shrived to catch up. Major motion picture studios are battling Internet piracy and grabbing all the headlines in the process, but what about the adult entertainment studios? They face the same problem, but are cast aside.

Internet piracy is a problem that faces all of them equally. It's illegal, and that is that.

But that is only a minute amount of talk that can be generated. And can be widespread with more than just one adult entertainer. Nina, you've been in the business so long, you've gone through all the format changes and technology advances, from VHS & Betamax & DVD to dial-up internet & high-speed advances. Bring in a younger star who has grown up only in the latest of technology, a younger voice that sees it from another perspective.

If Oxford University, the prestigious institution whose members start at the even-more acclaimed University of Oxford and speakers ranging from Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan & former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to Albert Einstein, Malcolm X & Michael Jackson, is good enough for debating porn, I'm sure something can get cooked up in Austin, Texas with equally spirited and informed words as Oxford's

The adult industry, similar to the music industry, has been hit hard by digital technology. And, similar to music, it is time for innovation. Nina has truly been a pioneer in her industry so it is no surprise that she is once again leading the way with her leap into Social Media.

This panel idea will bring another example of how an industry can re-position itself within the new world. Nina is an engaging speaker and has insight that will blow you away. Not to be missed.

I'm seeing how rapidly social networking has taken over the day-to-day uses of all age groups on the internet -- challenging parents to actually parent and filter the sites their kids peruse and mail they unwelcomely receive -- while also allowing adults to be adults and enjoy partaking in the full gamut of life's experiences. The porn industry has been a leader, despite what some may feel about that, in exploding this medium of communication. They can also lead where mainstream and adult material will go from here as new online methods arise. I welcome Nina's input for sharing her experiences within this evolution that reaches a growing audience for she and her counterparts, and how those ideas can be duplicated successes for mainstream communications as well.
on 2/9/09
I totally dig this idea. I was just reading Nina's book on the recommendation of friends and I found her to be insightful and intelligent, not to mention humorous! The porn industry has often been on the cutting edge of technology but had a bit of a learning curve on the communications side of it. I'm curious to hear Nina's take. I'm there!

on 2/9/09
This panel sounds like a bulletproof idea. Nina Hartley came to my college to give a lecture on her experiences, and I was impressed by her revolutionary concept - using the porn industry as a springboard to discuss feminist issues, instead of relegating it to a sort of backhanded 'boys-will-be-boys' clause and sweeping it under the rug. It should be even more cutting-edge to see how she views social networking and its impact on all these things.

I don't think any body else in the Adult Entertainment Industry would have been able to fit the bill as best as Nina Hartley. There are just a few other names like Paul Thomas and Ron Jeremy, but ever since getting my photo taken with Nina at AVN Fan Expo 2008 and posting it on Facebook, there have been sooo many comments and cheers for meeting such an icon.

This sounds like a great addition to SXSW! I would love to see and hear this presentation. Why not have a ground breaking, intelligent and informative woman explain another great aspect of social media that the mainstream audience doesn't normally hear about. Education comes in many forms!

@Jiz Lee: Thanks for the encouragement. I look forward to being able to attend and answer all of your questions.

@Floyd Lawson: Aw, thanks! You'll find that I can talk as well as I do, er, other things.

@Matt Sheehan: Good idea about a younger player. I don't know how it works to bring people in, but it's a good idea. Hope to see you there.

@Larry Dean: Excellent points. Adult has long been in the forefront of technological innovation, and social media is no exception. Great strides have been made in the areas of keeping minors away while allowing adults the full range of their rights.

@Siobhan O'Neill: So glad you liked the book! Thanks for the feedback.

@Annika Alexander: Thanks very much. Talking to university students is one of my favorite things to do while fully dressed. Women and men speaking directly about their sexual truths is both revolutionary and subversive.

@Jasper Ibe: So happy to hear people like the pic. I love meeting my fans in person. It's just a lot of fun, I find.

@Brad Barrish: It would be a lot smaller, that's for sure! It's a natural fit, as we've discovered.

@Bob Goff: Shucks, now you're gonna go and make me blush!

@Celeste Linker: Thanks. I hope I make it through the voting process. I look forward to meeting you.

@Fereshteh Toosi: Yes, adult entertainment drives a lot of things, doesn't it?

Thanks so much to all of you so far for being so positive. It's really nice to see.

This will be an interesting panel. Since porn drove personal entertainment options (tapes/DVD/Internet), its interaction with social networking concepts and the effects on general implementation of interactive media should be seriously considered.

I've had the pleasure of hearing Nina Hartley address many different types of audiences. She is not only very intelligent and very well informed, she is also a natural speaker - a "people person" who genuinely enjoys the interaction. She always gets a warm and receptive response from her audience. Plus, she has a great sense of humor, and her presentations are entertaining as well as informative. I look forward to any opportunity to hear Nina speak.
on 4/9/09
Nina is a fantastic speaker and an extremely intelligent woman. This fascinating topic is also an important one. With the never-ending introduction of new technologies, pornography may be in trouble. The internet provides amateurs and small studios with the ability to reach millions of people. Additionally, piracy and copyright infringement runs rampant. Porn studios need to focus on new ways to provide quality content at attractively priced levels, thereby dissuading people from downloading pirated copies or watching low-quality clips for free on the "tube" sites. We look forward to hearing Nina speak on this subject!

Nina is one of those personalities you can not forget once you hear her. Her unique perspective and experience with this subject is not to be missed by anyone, no matter what your opinions are on the issues. We can all learn from a panel like this.

Nina Hartley makes a unique contribution as a sex star and shrewd busness person in one body. She has made numerous presentations in my university classes and has always been a combination of organized and intelligent, humane and tantalizing. Besides drawing attention due to her topic and persona I am sure she will present new insights on the largest online business availabel from no one else.

Not to have Nina Hartley on this panel would be an injustice to say the least. Nina is an intelligent, well-spoken, compassionate individual, not to mention a great educator and communicator. Personality facets you do not always find in one gem. She will bring years of experience and expertise to the table that no one else could even begin to parallel.

Nina could be a one-woman panel of her own...she's probably FORGOTTEN more about sex than most humans will ever LEARN. And she's very smart about the XXX industry, proving it's not necessarily harmful to anyone.

And just FYI, the presence of pornography keeps the rates of rape and sex crimes DOWN...studies in Sweden, West Germany and Denmark all revealed that their sex crime rates either decreased or stayed the same when bans on pornography were lifted.

This very contemporary and important topic encompasses a discussion of the fundamental rights of those both in favor of and opposed to sexuality and the media. No one has a more profound understanding of the human dynamics and psychological nuances involved than Nina Hartley. She has observed first hand both the benefits and wreckage that can take place depending upon the maturity and discipline of the individual. A "must have" on the program.

+1!
I've known Nina for 15 years. I give her a BIG THUMBS UP (and one thumb in ;)

Book Nina, and plan to go see her. I'd bet on her providing one of the most noteworthy and entertaining presentations of the conference.

Notwithstanding her broad, diverse appeal to adult fans worldwide - AND over many years, THIS WOMAN HAS A LOT TO SAY THAT'S WORTH HEARING.

She's smart, sophisticated, charming, funny, outspoken, radical, insightful, AND a captivating speaker. (I've both heard her speak, and had the privilege of interviewing her for television on several occasions)

Nina is not a 'Porn Star trying to become an 'educator' - She's a brilliant and erudite woman with a long list of unique and fascinating life experiences and accomplishments - most of which normal people only dream about - and is more than qualified to speak on any of them.

Oh, BTW, she's also a real sweetheart, vivacious and fun, and very GENUINE.

You can't miss with this woman. I'll come to see her!

From reading her book, "Nina Hartley's Guide to Total Sex" with I.S. Levine, I think she also brings the right tone of articulate thought, solid information and compassionate nurturing for people, whatever her audience and subject. She also has a great, quick sense of humor and understands a presentation must combine good information with "performance values" to keep the audience entertained.

Sounds like a great opportunity to learn more about the past & present of the porn industry. As a school teacher from Philadelphia who tries his best to inform the minds of teenagers, this is potentially something that really helps the global community at large. Nina, quite frankly, is a brilliant person who has developed her reputation as a smart, caring, compassionate, and accepting person because she is PROACTIVE, and that is something that is desperately needed in today's too-often-reactive world. Good luck with this, Nina. - John

I'm sure that Nina wouldn't remember meeting me but I most certainly remember meeting her! As a 18 year old in Texas, I found her to be aticulate, funny, educated on a great many subjects and just as warm as she is beautiful. Now all of these years later, I find she hasn't changed a bit and SXSW could do worse than to have Nina on a panel....WAYYYYY WORSE! Make this your most memorable panel in the history of SXSW by having Nina Hartley attend!

I've attended several Nina Hartley lectures over the past decade or so, and she's an engaging speaker who easily holds an audience's attention - plus, she knows what she's talking about (unlike several others on "the circuit"). A panel with her on it can only be a hit with attendees.

Nina Hartley has been a guest lecturer in my UC Santa Barbara class on porn as a genre and industry for nearly fifteen years. The students love her because she is so knowledgeable, engaging, and forthright. It is good to see SXSW acknowledging how much can be learned from the adult industry, especially from the impressive Nina Hartley.

Nina Hartley is much more than your typical sexpert. Her 25 plus years in the industry as both a top performer and feminist sex positive spokesperson combined with her degree as a registered nurse uniquely qualifies her as an educator. Her best selling "Guide to Total Sex" and her educational workshops are both fun, whip smart, and brilliant. If you want an expert dream panel on basketball you invited Micheal Jordan on Sex and the adult industry you invite Nina Hartley, Tyra and Oprah both have.

on 4/9/09
As a woman, as a feminist, as a sexual being, and an ex performer in the adult buisness, I think a better woman could not have been picked for such a panel. I am thrilled. Nina is such a pioneer for taking charge of her career in times when women were so unequal in the workplace. She is a feminst icon to women of all generations and occupations. Both men and women, straight or gay, have so much to learn from her. Even those who have taken vows of celebacy will have something postive to walk away with. Nina Hartley has adapted and evolved as a buisnesswoman, a human, and within her sexual sphere. Proving that in order for survival we must continually grow with the ever changing world around us. This is not just about sex, it's about embracing positive change in all aspects of life. Applause to sxsw.

I'm thrilled to see that Nina will be leading this panel at SXSW. Nina is truly a revolutionary and a strong female voice in the adult industry and sexual education realm. There is no one better who can delve into both the history of porn and the current realities of the adult industry. On the subject of women's sexuality - on the topic of porn - Nina Hartley is unmatched - at least of anyone I've ever heard or read. The sheer breadth of her knowledge will leave you spellbound. Listening to this woman, a massive and burdensome load of mythology falls by the wayside listening to her discuss sexuality, porn, women in the sex industry, etc. On these topics, she is the ultimate insider - well-versed and immeasurably intelligent. Furthermore, Nina is politically conscious and active. I can say with all honesty that my own sexuality was given a substantial positive enhancement from the knowledge shared with me by Nina.

Ok, well, we have the who's who of porn here - AND - all of the comments thus made
could be considered professional courtesy - and - even so, there is no doubt
respect is universal as it should be - for Nina graduated magna cum laude in the nursing
program she enrolled in - nursing, not the "fantasy" of most but the real thing - nursing...

now, if anyone here understands this concept, they know that a key part of nursing is
"teaching" - teaching anatomy/physiology/micro....
nursing IS about teaching...

ok, well, if i have not lost everybody except the nurses - here is what I have to say...

If it was not for Nina -
my wife and I would be lost to each other -
if it were not for NIna -
I would be a lesser man than what I am tonight -
if it were not for Nina
the world would never know life from darkness
because ultimately there are so many whom need
her gentle guiding hand - me included and our world
is NOT sex positive as it should be...

I do not know Nina through porn
at least not the way many of you here do know her

I/we did discover her through her instructionals
but my love for her
is independent of her works

I love her most for her humor
i love her for her intuition
I love her because of her generous spirit
I love her because of her non-judgemental way

I love her because I just do
and before anyone makes a decision one way or the other
they owe it to themselves to at least see for themselves
what we all here see already

for the record, she did graduate magma cum laude
san fran state 85
and in nursing....

i love her because Nina has without reservation
consistently been the bestest friend in my life
and I would not be here today without her

that is my honest opinion
be it colored so

Nina is the most brilliant and well spoken woman in porn. I have seen her speak before and she is highly intelligent and captivating. She would definitely enliven this panel as no other could.

I have known Nina for six years and have attended a number of her lectures and classes. They're always wonderful, entertaining and filled with useful information and important insights. I have little to add to what's already been said, except that I'm certain her presentation will be both first-rate and well-attended.

Nina has been an inspiration to me since she spoke in Australia many years ago. She has always been insightful about the adult industry and now is no different. I would love to attend SXSW if only to hear her thoughts on this thoroughly interesting subject. We are going through a revolution and again the adult industry is one of the pioneers.

This is an excellent idea for a featured panel - timely, relevant, and of broad general interest to industry professionals and the public alike.

Nina Hartley is a consummate professional, and an individual who has long been at the forefront of progressive sexual exploration, education, and discourse. Her unparalleled experience coupled her lively and witty public presence ensure that this will be one of the most talked-about panels at SXSW '10.

I highly recommend that SXSW event organizers approve Ms. Hartley's proposed panel for inclusion.

Thank you,

It looks like I missed the vote, but I still wanted to chime in and say how lovely Nina Hartley is. I had the pleasure of meeting Nina at one of her classes in Chicago a few weeks ago, and her presentation was amazing! Not only is Nina intelligent, enthusiastic, captivating, magnetic, and kind, but she truly cares about helping her fans have the best sex possible. I was so happy with Nina's class in Chicago that I decided to go to Dark Odyssey a week later in Maryland, where Nina presented three classes. As expected, she was amazing. Nina has taught me so much in just a few weeks, and she has encouraged me to be true to myself and embrace my kinkiness. :-) Thank you, Nina, for being so helpful, so caring, so kind . . . . but most of all, thank you for being you!
