I participated in the first ever Laid Off Camp and presented my insights on starting a company while soaking up advice from the hundreds of attendees. Using my newfound knowledge and network, I got a consulting company fired up and have been invited to present at various technology conferences based on the contents of my blog (October brings a keynote in Toronto).

Losing my last job was the best thing that happened to me and Laid Off Camp was the second best. What is a real blast is that I am taking public sector disaster response training and volunteering for various San Francisco Bay Area agencies such as the San Mateo County Sheriff's Communications Unit, San Bruno Community Preparedness Committee, San Francisco Airport Emergency Operations Group, and I have been tapped to work in the San Mateo County Emergency Operations Center. My income is down substantially from my Silicon Valley days, but II am having the time of my life!!
