"Should application developers develop for a single platform or take a platform agnostic approach?" is a particularly interesting question - would be great to see some stats and empirical data regarding this.

The entire mindset of social information is driven by the thought that the user dictates what they see, when they see it and where they see it. You must take the approach of developing for all platforms. It is feasible to start with the most popular platform for your space and develop others later, but omitting any platform is omitting audience.
