Title:

Augmented Reality - Gimmicky Trend or Market-Ready Technology?

Description:
Augmented Reality has been around for a while, but recently has bubbled up into Flash web apps through PaperVision, and camera object detection magic FLARToolkit. Also, experimental integrations into mobile devices have introduced a special element to hand-held gaming, where something akin to scifi holograms are possible. Is AR just a trend or market ready technology?
Questions
Answered:
  1. What exactly is Augmented Reality?
  2. What is the reliability of the technology in recognizing more than simple symbols?
  3. Why would this technology be any more feasible now, even though it has existed for years?
  4. What makes this technology applicable to the web?
  5. What makes this technology applicable to mobile?
  6. Besides gaming, are there any other uses for this technology?
  7. How do you see this technology being used beyond the desktop or mobile (e.g. in large-scale displays)?
  8. Will this technology suffer from similar limitations (in delay/responsiveness) to motion, such as the Wii?
  9. How much of AR is just “coolness-factor”, and how much is actually useful and marketable?
  10. How can AR go beyond a virtual display, and integrate into modern motion detection and face recognition?

Thumbs up. It will be interesting to see what happens to AR between now and the panel. Personally, I see more crap than uses on the web (altho there are definitely uses still there), but a ton of potential on mobile and digital displays. I will be interested to hear your take.

Would also like to see this one make it and can also offer up some of our AR examples we've already developed from Zugara:

Webcam Social Shopper - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxQZuo6pFUw

Cannonballz Augmented Reality Game - http://www.cannonballzthegame.com

We also have a Facebook Page on everything Augmented Reality that you can check out and join at http://www.facebook.com/augmentedreality

Thanks!
