Your vote:

Description:
Past SXSW panels have shown that Black bloggers and bloggers of color are becoming more prominent and well-known as the years progress. From "Blogging While Black" to being "Digital Urbanites", being a Black blogger is definitely not limited to any monolithic stereotype. Learn from some of the pioneers and thought-leaders in the Black blogosphere on our past, present, and future.
Questions
Answered:
  1. What does being a black blogger mean (if anything)?
  2. When did you begin blogging, and why?
  3. What trends do you see with Black bloggers as technology becomes more ubiquitous?
  4. What do you see as the future of Black blogging?
  5. Are there any trends or topics you would like to see discussed in the future?
  6. Black blogging seems to have taken off with the advent of Black celebrity gossip. How do you see this sort of relationship as it relates to other bloggers relationship with celebrities (like Perez Hilton)?
  7. There are currently two blogging Awards for Black bloggers -- the Black Weblog Awards and the Black Web Awards. Do you see these events as being representative of the Black blogging community?
  8. NPR's "News and Notes" created an interesting intersection between Black bloggers and mainstream media. With its cancellation, where do you see MSM and Black bloggers intersecting?

I think when it comes to social media and technolgy, there are many black blogging rockstars, and many more who are doing great work without the rockstar status. Hopefully, this will lead to minorites getting key postitions or partnerships in digital media and marketing companies

Plus, I think its time for kids to see that there are cool, tech people of color who smart, funny, talented and who loves technology.

I started blogging a few years ago and I have an urban pop culture blog (www.soul88.blogspot.com),an old school hip hop blog (www.keepersoftheart.blogspot.com) a green news blog (http://www.hirejamus.blogspot.com/)a green jobs platform (www.hirejam.com) with a social media blog coming.

With less minorities in newsrooms, there are probably more black bloggers than people may think and hopefully there will be more awards to spotlight them.

Being in Ohio, I hope that there will also be regional awards presented to hardworking bloggers across the US.

One of the topics I would like to see is why there are so few African Americans and Latin parters, CEO's, VP's in web 2.0 companies. Given that its the 21st, I think African Americans and Latins to be part of the digital revolution early rather than later

I would like to be part of the planning process.

great topic! there is a huge black blogosphere that is largely ignored by the mainstream. would love to see this panel!

The blogosphere is so wide open; be interesting to see these different takes on life via blogging through the black lens, whether it be lifestreaming, music, politics, commercial endeavors, art, food, etc.

I think the two awards are a good lens through which to view the state of the black blogosphere as a whole. Forces perspective outside of the usual suspects (not that I don't love and respect the usual suspects). I'm especially looking forward to the discussion of "News and Notes" (or lack thereof). I think it's important to keep this subject visible in a venue like SXSW. I appreciate the new take on it.

Maurice, this is a great panel idea. While people of color are often presented as being left out of technology shifts, I think many are doing a great job of leveraging the power of social media. It's great that you are highlighting these trailblazers!

Great idea! I'm sure many people would be interested in learning about a side of the web we don't see that often!

I hope all the people who keep saying, "Where are all the bloggers of color?" attend and will finally stop asking that question. is there any way this can be mandatory?

Great topic! While I appreciate the need for niche blogging (mom's, women in tech, black females, white guys who like motorcycles), I hope to see continued growth in multicultural, multiracial blogs since that represents the melting pot that is uniquely the U.S.. Nevertheless, the niches are interesting and Maurice brings great expertise to the discussion.

As a African American blogger I never knew that the black blogosphere was so huge. It would be great exposure for those of us that have a passion for sharing our story. Black people have always been story tellers, it is a part of our tribal history, it is just now our story can be heard everywhere with the help of technology. I really hope this panel would be considered. It would also be good for others to see SXSW supports the black blogosphere as well.

Thanks all for the comments. Veronica made an interesting observation with regard to people asking about the frequency of bloggers of color. For the past five years, I've put on the Black Weblog Awards and recognized Black bloggers in a number of different categories, and I would love to be able to showcase more and tell the stories of those who are really doing some big things in this space.

I think this is a great idea. Black bloggers have influence and there are so many of us writing about a variety of things.

Differences of perspectives is WHY people blog and share. It's now easy to get your voice out there but who is actually reading you and taking note? I don't know. But to have that window of opportunity open is a blessing!

Thank you for adding this cultural aspect because there is NOT an AUTHORITY when it comes to any race for there are a variety of experiences and interpretations. Tis is just my opinion on this because I read and am around a lot of wonderful people who add to my thought process of how I see race in America during this time in history.

I look forward to learning more.
