Title:

Shut Up And Code! (Hacking The Future of News)

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Jacob Harris, The New York Times
Description:
Talk is cheap. Talk about the future of news is cheaper still, especially since so little leads to action. It's time we reversed that pattern. In this panel, experienced news hackers will offer practical advice and blunt opinions for beginner through expert news hackers who burn to create the future of news. [Although it's a panel, I hope there also will be a conversation between panelists and the audience.]

Answered:
  1. What makes for a good interactive news application?
  2. What technical skills do you need to learn to be a news hacker?

  4. When do you customize an open source product and when do you hack from scratch?
  5. How do you build it fast and cheap yet make it awesome?
  6. Are algorithms alone enough or is there still a need for editorial selection and content?

  8. How do you provide in-depth content yet keep it accessible for the introductory reader?
  9. How do you support users looking for an overview and looking for in-depth analysis?

If more journalists had hacker tendencies, the world would be a much better place.

Jake is one of the digital gurus over at the NY Times. Trust me -- you'll want this panel on your SXSW schedule.

Was Jake at the NYT SxSW panel last year? I remember that one had one guy who "got it" re: new media and the other panelist from the Times seemed defensive and pretty clueless. I care what happens to this newspaper, so any panel that provides insight and hope is one I won't want to miss.

I actually moderated a panel on newspaper APIs last year at SXSW. I think you're thinking of another panel, but I like to think that I get it... Thanks for the comment!

Jake is definitely one of the guys who "gets it".
Smart, funny, low ego, collaborative.

Jacob's department at the NY Times is one of the most forward-thinking news organizations in existence. The intersection of communication and technology is one of the key benefits of attending SXSW, and panels that push the tech skills of communicators are of utmost importance.
