To expand, this session will take a look at the evolution of consumer purchase behavior online. Social networks, casual games and virtual worlds have changed how we think about buying things online and they have created a big opening for new payment models. Casual gamers on Facebook and MySpace and participants in virtual worlds like Gaia Online aren’t just buying goods via Paypal, Offerpal or with their credit cards – huge percentages of them are billing goods directly to their mobile phone accounts. There is a huge opportunity to take this payment model (mixing and matching mobile payments, offer-based payments, debit/credit payments, etc.) and extend it beyond the digital goods arena into areas of e-commerce served today only by debit/credit payment platforms.

I saw David earlier this summer at MobileBeat on a mobile/social media panel – he brings an interesting perspective as someone who has navigated the complexities of the mobile carrier and mobile content markets to deliver a product that has taken off in terms of usage. This would be a great opp. to hear his thoughts on what kinds of biz models are required to support mobile payments in the larger e-commerce and m-commerce realms.

Looking forward to seeing this panel and hopefully it will demystify and show that mobile payments are not just a behavior reserved for asian countries. Particularly interested in seeing what are the most popular items people buy on mobile.
