Title:

Lawyers Need Social Media Too!

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Rajeev Malik, Network Solutions
Description:
Lawyers are often perceived as obstacles saying NO NO NO to social media. But lawyers can and should be enablers for social media. In fact, lawyers can actually add credibility to social media campaigns by participating and contributing by blogging, making videos and podcasts and generally opening up and having a good time (for once in their lives....). This panel will discuss how lawyers are actively participating in social media.
Questions
Answered:
  1. Why many lawyers always say NO.
  2. How to get your lawyer to say YES
  3. How can the community/social media be benefitted by lawyer involvement?
  4. What are the benefits of a lawyer serving as an enabler instead of an obstructionist?
  5. What examples are there of lawyers enabling social media?
  6. Why you should not be afraid of lawyers?
  7. Are lawyers really people?

Lawyers were some of the first bloggers -- and some of the biggest name bloggers, like Instapundit. They need other forms of social media, too. We did a tweetchat on Twitter recently featuring a lawyer answering copyright and trademark questions. It was extremely popular.

Was able to see the panel by Shashi and Raj at SXSW last year - the audience was involved in full of questions. Would be great to hear them discuss this new topic this year.

I heard Raj Malik speak on a very similar topic at a conference earlier this year and he presented the material in an easy-to-digest way along with providing many key take-away points for both the legal and non-legal mind alike.

Sometimes NO can save a company fundamental blushes. Lawyers have a key role to play in social media, especially so where a company is likely to be liable from what is innocently said. Knowing from them how to engage in social media responsibly can be very helpful to many organizations.

I'm a lawyer and a big fan and backer of social media. I recently spoke as part of a panel on social media at the ABA Annual Meeting in Chicago and the session was packed. Younger lawyers know all about social media but, as usual, the older ones are slower on the uptake and don't trust what they can't understand. Don't get me wrong, not trusting what you don't understand is a good instinct, but it can keep you from taking part in a lot of things because the speed or new ideas on the Web is too fast for the conventional feedback loop used by lawyers. By the time many lawyers "get it" the "it" isn't important anymore. As a result lawyers are always playing catch-up unsuccessfully. The solution? I guess that's what you will find out at SXSW right?
