How to Teach Entrepreneurialism Globally

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Doug Richard, School for Startups
Description:
Entrepreneurialism is global. As the world gets small, entrepreneurs develop a more global reach, but how does an entrepreneur start? In what ways does an entrepreneur from Silicon Valley differ to one in Delhi? There is a whole new generation of potential entrepreneurs out there, without a clue how to start. There are job shortages for students graduating university and college who are venturing out on their own.
Questions
Answered:
  1. Can you teach entrepreneurialism?
  2. Why do entrepreneurs differ in different regions?
  3. How can we help educate the next generation?
  4. Can there be too many entrepreneurs?
  5. Can anyone be an entrepreneur?
  6. What kind of help does the government give to small businesses?
  7. What can an entrepreneur do to give themselves the best chance of funding?
  8. How can entrepreneurs give themselves the best chance of success?
  9. What are to do's and don'ts of being an entrepreneur across the globe?
  10. What is entrepreneurialism?

I saw Doug give a seminar on Entrepreneurialism in the UK earlier this year, and would love the opportunity to see him again at SXSW - he spoke with an authority, verve and enthusiasm that really excited me about the prospects facing new entrepreneurs in the 21st century. Looking forward to it!

As a partner in a small but flourishing US based import-export business, I look forward to hear Doug’s views on worldwide entrepreneurship. From my experience I have found a great difference in styles between leading entrepreneurs worldwide, in particularly in the newly emerging Eastern-European markets. I would also like to ask if Doug has had much experience dealing with the sudden emergence of businesses in the UAE particularly with Dubai based firms. With commerce becoming increasingly globalised and with the sudden change in the world’s economic makeup, it is great to see an experienced and deeply respected businessman such as Doug Richard on hand to answer such queries at this year’s show.

Doug is one of the most gifted teachers I have met and an engaging speaker. His insights are useful, interesting and delivered in a no-nonsense style that is instantly likeable whilst inspiring respect. I believe I'm still learning to be an entrepreneur, and so attending Doug's panel in this year’s SXSW would be incredible. I'm interested to hear this panel’s opinion on what constitutes an entrepreneur and, more importantly, whether everyone has it in them.

Doug is without a doubt the most engaging and thought-provoking speaker on entrepreneurialism you're ever likely to hear. This will be a serious treat for SXSW attendees and I'm only sorry I can't be there to see it!

I was fortunate enough to attend one of Doug's School for Startups events up in Edinburgh last year - I live in London and dont normally attend business events outside of the capital but I knew it would be worth my while and indeed it was!! Never before have a sat through a 9 hour seminar and still felt motivated and inspired at the end. Doug has an amazing gift for being able to connect with an array of entrepreneurs from startups right through to established folk - everyone there was hanging off Doug's every word and the queue to speak to him well - it was a long one! I also found him humorously entertaining and had me in stitches a few times - he's no ordinary serial entrepreneur - if you want to learn the ins and outs of business success and how you and your business can get there - then don't be shy and vote for Doug!

I was mentored by Doug over two decades ago and I've been a serial entreprenuer ever since. From writer, to publisher, to filmmaker, my career has followed my interests because Doug taught me to see the "bones" of a business. What is needed to start it, to build it, to keep it running. Creative, passionate, intelligent, candid, happy, friendly and determined, he demonstrates the personal resiliance that enterprenuers need to survive and prosper.

He's an amazing speaker and what he has to say changes people profoundly.

I appreciate the compliments. Thank you. The focus here hopefully will be to address the myth that entrepreneurship can't be taught. I think that School for Startups has shown that it can be taught. And if it can be taught it can be taught anywhere.

The question that needs to be aired and debated is how we drive entrepreneurial education globally.

Teaching entrepreneurs? Is this possible? I would really like to hear a discussion on this as I am not convinced that it is something that can be achieved through training alone. Doesn't it also require a fundamental attitude and belief that cannot be taught? I look forward to discussing this with Doug as SXSW, if, hopefully, his panel proposition is picked

In one day Doug you can teach you things that take years of experimentation and cost thousands to find out by trial and error.

I spent 2 days with Doug at his School for Startups and learnt more about business in those 2 days than in the prior 10 years. Doug is inspirational, opinionated, intelligent, encouraging, entertaining and terrifying in equal measure - he is one of the smartest people I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. He's also American and loves Texas, so let him speak to the World at SXSW - he won't let you guys down.

The School for Startups is the most inspirational and loaded with knowledge series of events I’ve ever had chance to attend. Doug’s tips on how to start and keep running the business are incredibly valuable. I am sure many of attendees will avoid failures, so painful for startups, using the information gained on the seminar.

I thought it is impossible to stay excited and entertained every minute on a 9 hours seminar – Doug’s events proved it wrong!

I hope his panel at SXSW will help create more events like School for Startups globally.

As a publisher who showcases examples of individuals making an enormous difference to their own lives - and the lives of others - through the passion of entrepreneurship, I believe wholeheartedly in Doug's mission. Passion is where it starts but it needs nurturing and shaping. This is important work. It has the power to change the lives of individuals, families, commuinities, towns, countries and continents and there is no one better placed than Doug Richard to do it. His own track record of success in business and his desire to help others along the road qualify him, withut question. But he needs support which is why I endorse this motion.

As one of the team from the British Library's Business & IP Centre who work together with the School for Startups to support entrepreneurs in London, I have seen the energy and inspiration the audience come out with. Our aim is to provide entrepreneurs with the tools for success, we have millions of pounds worth of market research and company data to access for free and the professional advice on how to use this information to your benefit. Our partners then provide the extra skills and advice needed to take an idea to a business. School for Startups is one of the oragnisations we recommend and who we know can help.

You can see a bitesize taster of the straight talking Doug Richard on stage recently at the library. See YouTube channel BIPCTV -

Having seen, been a part of and ran entrepreneurial companies on both sides of the Atlantic, Doug is superbly well placed to teach this subject. Not only that, but his style is one of the most entertaining and engaging that I've seen from any speaker on similar topics. SXSW would be lucky to get Doug!

SXSW needs to hear what Doug has to say - period!
on 1/9/09
Doug knows what he's talking about, knows how to communicate and knows how to help people to help themselves. Top, top, top class bloke.

Doug's School for Start-ups is excellent. As a new business start-up I found the time spent with Doug in London extremely relevant, interactive, and mind-blowing. You pick up gems that are worth their weight in gold! He would be a real asset at SXSW.

To Ann Hadlow,

Ann, Your comments reflect the common wisdom that there is something innate about an entrepreneur. I think that there is no doubt that people need the aspiration and creative drive but that is true in all fields of endeavor. So it isn't unique to entrepreneurs. But there are a wealth of things that can be taught and what is unfortunate is that there is not enough emphasis placed on transferring those skills around the globe...
Even here in the UK old prejudices haven't died. (See http://www.schoolforstartups.co.uk/blog/?p=74)

His practical insights into entrepreneurialism and his no nonsense American style of delivery has made him a household name in the UK.
Doug is a top man and deserves the support of all of us.

I attended the School for Start Ups in Glasgow in December 2008, it was terrific - still makes me think; he is practical, opinionated, and interesting. SXSW will be all the richer if Doug Richard makes it into the programme!

I have worked with Doug and put 300 aspiring entrepreneurs through his School for Startups in Scotland. In my 10 years of running entrepreneurship workshops nobody has delivered "real time" "high-impact" startup advice in the format that Doug has. Razor sharp legal mind combined with real software startup and growth experience. One of the best enterprise educators, globally. Andrew Mitchell, www.informatics-ventures.com

I've had the privilege of hearing Doug speak on a number of occasions now, and it's always been fun, engaging and inspiring. I'm very eager to hear his thoughts on such a grand/wide-reaching topic as this!

I was lucky to be invited to Doug's School for Startups sessions in Ipswich earlier this year. The day long seminar included overviews on several of the Dragon’s Den related ventures. These ranged from the support for Levi Roots, who has produced another excellent little treat - Reggae Reggae Tomato Ketchup, a lady who wrongly tried to compete with tripadviser to another the Dragons did not back but went on to enjoy a massive trade with female army personnel. The event was very enjoyable and inspiring.
Doug demolished many wrongly held business myths. He has a good sense of humour, a wealth of knowledge and is well able to help anyone wishing to launch his or her own enterprise. As I left, he was discussing business tactics etc with a long queue of potential entrepreneurs.

We do work in this field every day and I agree with Doug's approach. Our organization, a non-profit helping the best and brightest in Northeast Ohio, both invests money and time to help move our economy in a new direction. Entrepreneurism CAN be taught.

Hi Doug,

I would love to get involved in this somehow. We at Stanford think about it constantly, and as part of the biggest student group that works with students, faculty, and industry, BASES has learned a lot of things about this exact topic and engaged various similar organization around the world.

Let me know
