Title:

Black Female Bloggers & the Future of Media

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Faith Dow, Freelance Writer/Social Media Activist
Description:
Bloggers are sometimes accused of not having journalistic skills, yet we see content being plagiarized by well-known professionals. As newspapers fold or move to online content we need to start creating our own sources for news. Bloggers should not merely regurgitate national feeds but cover our own individual markets. We are highly valued by marketing companies and should be building relationships. We are our own niche.
Questions
Answered:
  1. Where do people go who want to have access to non-corporate news sources?
  2. Why are issues that affect the quality of the lives of black women (such as acts of violence) not being adequately covered?
  3. How do we increase the number of users of social media, access and familiarity with technology?
  4. How do we address the corporate interests of providers who may try to limit future access for users?
  5. Why we need to petition the FCC to unbundle the cable networks and support an ala carte option.
  6. Why having local new sources is so important.
  7. What are other means available to access the internet aside from desktops/laptops?
  8. How do we build a network of people online and offline?
  9. How do we break down intra-black barriers based on ethnicity, class or ideology and respond to gendered racism?
  10. Why is it important for black women to keep up with the digital age future technology trends?

This is a going to be a great panel. I will add the other panelists I have in mind shortly. We also need to realize out value to marketers. There are many individuals and companies alike that are interested in our unique skills. We have nearly $800B in spending power that is yet to be fully utilized. Any efforts we make at establishing excellence will uplift many.

Bloggers and other freelancers have high value. They give instant access to candid thoughts and ideas. Creativity and uniqueness add the input of those who are normally excluded from the discussion on issues that affect them. Companies still pay millions of dollars to access such information, and control and manipulate how that data is distributed and used. This is an opportunity to increase freedom, influence and financial strength.

Sounds like a great topic.

I can announce two of the panelists (barring scheduling conflicts) will be Ananda Leeke http://twitter.com/anandaleeke of BAP Living http://baplivingforbapsandebw.ning.com, Sisterhood the Blog http://sisterhoodtheblog.wordpress.com and Shireen Mitchell http://www.shireenmitchell.com aka digitalsista on Twitter http://twitter.com/digitalsista. You can also check out Ananda's podcast on Women of Color & Marketing where we spoke for an hour http://www.talkshoe.com/tc/42015

I also wanted to add this panel is being presented by a regular person. I'm not represented by a large conglomerate or presenting a panel for my job. I'm certain those panels have value but their large budgets and unlimited funding certainly make attending SXSW just another day at the office so to speak. I am doing this grassroots. I will certainly try to be as savvy as possible but I'm not coming to this already "hooked-up". This is ADVOCACY work as far as I'm concerned.

I can announce my other panelist will be Gina McCauley, attorney and blog host of http://whataboutourdaughters.com and http://michelleobamawatch.com. If you're a regular reader of her blog you'll note that I recently finished a 5 week guest blog stint there and it was a wonderful experience. I'm still tweaking the format and may add another speaker but this looks set. Please continue to vote and thank you for your support!

Cool panel that I would love to see happen.

Love the advocacy angle on all of this, Faith. And having Gina onboard will make this a really powerful experience for all. Good luck!

Just adding more info for the lurkers: According to the U.S Census, Black America will approach $1.2 trillion in disposable income by 2012. It is Black women as the head of the majority of households who control this income. Also we are the largest group of technology users regarding cell phones with full data capabilities and are moving away from desktop/laptop usage as our main conduit for internet access. With more technological advances we will also be poised to build partnerships and focus on issues that are most important to us bypassing any previous gatekeepers. Such is the case with the coverage of the Dunbar Village home invasion/gang rape. To ensure adequate coverage, the blog host Ms. McCauley has hired a veteran journalist to report it and the readers have been donating to fund it. Now the Associated Press has decided to pick it up for their wire service. As old models fall and fade out a new one will emerge. Those willing to form strategic alliances and value input from multiple sources will emerge.

This sounds like it will be a worthwhile event. Can't wait.

Marketing power would be to reach the buying power of the Black Female Empty nester - very much over looked because she's beyond the 18-34. Whereas she was once the "single mother", now she's educated and ready to live life. She's shopping, traveling, buying her dream car, remodeling her home, planting her garden (no longer trampled by kids). Lastly, she reads and share blogs daily.

Great topic. Black America's collective buying power is tremendous. That same power can be harnessed to create effective advocacy and activism. Great job, Faith, for bringing the conversation to the forefront.

This looks like a great panel, especially digging the advocacy angle. I'm a big fan of digitalsista and looking forward to learn more about the other panelists. Here's to hoping you actually get to discuss the topic at hand and that the audience doesn't get you caught up in just discussing identity issues -- that can happen at SXSW. There's a lot that you guys want to bring to the table, and I'm sure many will look forward to hearing it.
