Your vote:

Description:
Many newspapers have online community features, but few of them have user interaction that is intelligent, responsible discourse. Can a newspaper set behavioral ground rules and still claim to be an open forum? What staff and time resources should be in place to effectively foster and moderate a thriving community? We’ll explore these questions and offer a step-by-step playbook for evolving the social newspaper.

  1. What steps can a newspaper take to effectively "clean up" their comments/community
  2. Can a newspaper enforce community rules and still claim free speech?

  4. Can thriving community actually be monetized for the newspaper?
  5. Can community extend between both the web and print versions of the newspaper?
  6. Are there examples of newspapers/media outlets doing community the right way?
  7. What would a successful community "look" like?
  8. Will taking away anonymity improve the tone/intelligence of discussion/discourse?

This would be a great group and an amazing panel. It's a topic I'm particularly interested in since my husband works in this field.

Even my small town paper is experimenting with comments. But it's the kind of nasty free for all that cannot move discussion forward. I'd love to hear about useful alternatives.

This is an interesting and timely topic becauase there are a lot of issues at work, newspapers trying to manage through severe changes in their business model while they are opening up and trying to manage community dialogue about the news. reat idea!
