World Wide UI: Rise of the Data Alchemist

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Jonathan Gosier, Appfrica.org
Description:
We're living in the 'most measured age in history' collecting unprecedented amounts of data about unprecedented amounts of stuff. This panel looks at rising trends in informatics and UI design to determine if 'all this data' can be democratized in ways that helps everyone, including the poor, illiterate and users who may not understand the language of the app/infographic designer. Looks at examples (good and bad) from designers on each continent.
Questions
Answered:
  1. What goes into programming UI for users world wide? Is good user experince universal?
  2. Can infographics cross cultural and lingual borders?
  3. Is data visualization an emerging discipline or a hobby? Is it all just data-porn?
  4. Examples of unique visualizations from around the world.
  5. Designing for Mobile vs. PCs. What are the common mistakes developers make?
  6. Click, Rotate or Touch. Good and bad examples of each.
  7. Can mapping the world actually benefit people living 'off the grid'?
  8. Can design be overthought? Is the OLPC an example?
  9. Emerging trends and technologies of informatics. What are they? (ex. Prefuse, Processing, Flare)

If information is power (and I believe it is), then the concept of the democratization of information is one of the most powerful ideas out there. What would happen if the poor and illiterate across the globe got access to the information that has traditionally been the province of the rich and powerful ? I think the idea is transformative.

Jon Gosier and Appfrica have been making waves in the IT sector in Uganda for the last year. This panel looks to be an exciting summary of the conversations happening in Appfrica Labs, and progressively taking place around the world. What's interesting here is the possibility to take the application of the work across platforms--that this type of data visualization has implications not just in the IT world, but also in other sectors as well.

Great idea Jon. Data visualization may make the difference in today's world where we generate massive amounts of data. With information/knowledge changing so rapidly, this is one way for us to try to keep up with it all while continuing with new discoveries/innovations.
