Title:

Passionate People: The Key Ingredient to Social Media Success

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Meghan Warby, Argyle Communications
Description:
Regardless of the different avenues an organization takes to inform online audiences about a cause, there is but one vital factor that successfully binds social change and social media - passionate people. This panel's roster blurs the line between personal and professional to achieve unparalleled success on behalf of their cause, workplace, employer, and ultimately, values.
Questions
Answered:
  1. Do you believe that your career path has been guided by a 'calling'?
  2. How did you identify your personal passion for your 'cause' and eventually correlate this with 'work'?
  3. Are certain social media platforms more or less effective in communicating your passion for your cause?
  4. Can you share an experience where you used a social media platform that did not properly reflect your passion for your cause & why you think it did not?
  5. Do you find it difficult or even necessary to separate your personal online voice with your professional online voice?
  6. What do you do to re-energize your true enthusiasm for your work when the minutia of 'administrivia' becomes overwhelming?
  7. Can you name personal and professional 'idols' or cultural touchstones that have inspired you or affected your approach to work?
  8. Do you believe that as lines blur between work and life due to social media (i.e. 'Friending' bosses, Corporate Twitter accounts, etc), causes will have an easier time engaging passionate supporters or a more difficult time 'fighting static'?
  9. How has your passion for your work affected your personal outlook in personal social situations, do you ever feel encumbered or obligated to carry your causes' mantle?
  10. Do you gauge supporters by their passion for your cause and if so how?

I really, really, really hope this ones makes it in - would love to attend!

Great idea. Interesting questions here. Echoes some issues I think about/work with/struggle around as "work," interests, avocations, side projects, conversations all blur together.

Thanks so much for the supportive comments, guys - greatly appreciated.

This panel will be phenomenal thanks to the roster of speakers:
James Topham of WarChild (@topsatwarchild)
Sameer Vasta World Bank & Storyteller Extraordinaire (@vasta)
Ryan Taylor of the Fair Trade Jewellery Co., HoHoTO (@ryantaylor)

Here's hoping the voters agree!

interesting session... could see this being re-purposed for other events (traveling roadshow anyone?). Some good questions.. I'm particularly interested in 2, 4, 5, & 9... let's see what the other voters have to say!

Your social network's passion is kicking my social network's passion's ass!

Here's to your success, hope to see you present this discussion.

I'm *extremely* exited about the potential of presenting with this group, I think there is lot to explore with such an interactive topic.

I can't think of anyone better than Meghan to talk about the power of passionate people. There's far too much emphasis but on the numbers of "fans" brands or organizations have without looking closer at whether or not those people are actually passionate advocates. Looks like a great panel too...I wouldn't miss this.

You know what I'm going to do? I'm going to make some promises. And I never break a promise.

If this panel gets in to SXSWi this year, I promise to:

1. Give everyone that attends the panel a massive Vasta-sized hug. And I give a damn good hug.

2. Let everyone that attends the panel crash at my place in DC whenever they're in the area. Seriously. I'll even let you have the bed and I'll crash on the couch.

3. Send everyone that attends the panel a personal hand-written — or, even better, type-written on my Olivetti — note on pretty cotton paper in the mail thanking them for their support. (You'll have to provide me with your postal address, of course.)

Promises have been made. Promises will be kept.

(Yeah, that's my kind of passion.)

For what it's worth, the offers above stand whether we get in or not. You know, because you all make me smile. Also, because I like having visitors and I enjoy sending stuff in the mail and I especially love hugs.

I don't believe you can compartmentalize passion at least not for long. By this I mean be passionate in one part of your life and not in another. I would imagine the part of your life about which you are less passionate would fade to grey and not be sustainable. And so the message to employers might be to find a way to connect with employees passions for causes outside of work in an authentic way. I would be interested to hear what the panellists think of this.

Would love to attend this! Looks like a fantastic panel without the usual staid questions about social media and public/private spaces.

Especially interested in what you all have to say on the role of values, particularly when they're at odds with a professional commitment.

I voted just for the hug.

Sounds like we are on the same wavelength. I proposed a solo presentation titled "Making Genuine Connections: Putting Passion Over Process"...

Ms Warby is focused and driven. I would definitely love to sit through this panel to hear all the great things she would have to say about social media.
