Description:
With Facebook, MySpace, Friendster, Hi5, Bebo, LinkedIn and even Plaxo competing for eyeballs and clicks in the Great Social Networking War of 2009, is there really room for YASN (Yet Another Social Network)? This panel will debate whether less is more in social networking. Or is it?

There is plenty of room for more social networks. They will be more niche however. The question is, will users be able to stay on top of them. Myself and others are working on aggregation tools to deal with just that. Great idea for a panel, a must for any social startup.

Thanks for your comment, Michael. I'm still recruiting people to participate in this panel, so if you're interested, please email me at sxsw[at]thebdgway[dot]com. I'm thinking it would be great to have someone from Facebook and then people from 2-3 other niche or enterprise social networks.

Here are 10 questions I plan to address in my presentation. 1. Why do we have so many social networks? 2. Would it best for everybody if we all just used Facebook? 3. Is there actually a benefit to having a few (or many) social networks? 4. What is a "vertical" or "niche" social network and what advantages does it have over Facebook? 5. What is the difference between a vertical social network and a Facebook Group? 6. What is private, white-label social networking? 7. What are some of the advantages of private, white-label social networking over consumer social networking? 8. How can we fix the data portability problem in social networking? 9. How can we address issues of privacy in social networking? 10. How can we manage multiple "personas" (e.g. personal on Facebook vs. work on LinkedIn)?

To Michael's point, another good question to ask might be: how do we stay on top of all of our social networking activity?

Hi Henry: all definitely good points. (I love the word "empanel" too -- you should coin that!) I'll probably pare down the questions to the top 2 or 3 as, depending on the size of the panel, that might be all the time we have.
Do it today!
