Title:

What Do I Do With Myself, Now that the Economy Has Collapsed?

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
Lane Becker, Get Satisfaction, Inc.
Description:
They say the tech economy ebbs and flows on a 7 year cycle, and if that's true, we're just about over the peak and into the down cycle for companies and employees alike. So what are we to do with ourselves, when it all comes crashing down around us? This panel's been through a downturn or two and will have some specific recommendations about how to get the most out of it, both personally and professionally.
Questions
Answered:
  1. What opportunities exist for technically minded folks during an economic recession?
  2. or, What can I do with myself, now that I can't seem to find a full-time job?
  3. Where should I look for hidden opportunities, now that the big companies aren't hiring left and right?
  4. What are the best ways to keep my skills nimble and up to date when I'm not entirely employed?
  5. What kinds of personal projects can I work on, and how will those benefit me?
  6. Is it true that the downturn is the best time to start a company?
  7. What are alternative sources of potential income outside the tech field for someone with a technical background?
  8. What's the best thing about the downturn?
  9. Why does it seem like all the best and most truly innovative ideas come during times of economic collapse?
  10. Will things ever get better again?

How tempted am I to suggest what we can do with ourselves? Great idea, Lane, and sadly, very relevant...

Great idea. Rule 1: Don't be smug with folks today because you'll be asking them for a job next year.

Scrape together the last few bucks and go down to Texas and party like its 1999?

Not sure we have enough data on the cycles of the "tech economy" to make accurate predictions, but that's just one of the things we can discuss, here.

Great idea to get together and talk over the options though, Lane.

It's always good to look for ways to be self-employed. In time of recession a self-employed person doesn't have to worry about being sacked.
