Description:
Traffic surges on the Internet can topple newly popular web services, a common side-effect of success called "Growing Pains." With today's technology, web services can provide more functionality and consume fewer server resources by distributing the workload. This is an overview of technologies available and strategies to use.

I've seen some of the stuff Shaler has done that he showed off at Phx Dev House (http://www.scrollinondubs.com/2007/08/05/phoenix-dev-house/). He has some killer ideas and knows all about traffic surges having done a few posts with 1000+ diggs. This will no doubt be an interesting preso for developers. sean

I just released a proof-of-concept of this type of technology in the form of a 3rd party Digg tool. It allows Digg users to download their voting history, then search within that dataset without having to connect to Digg's servers. http://brian.shaler.name/digg/oracle/
