Hey - thanks for the comments everyone! (I work with Rennie & Kenneth just for full disclosure).

This panel will hopefully be a great conversation about how we as community managers, businesses, etc. look beyond traditional web metrics as the only way to measure success and really get into what makes a community grow.

Communities are about people & relationships not visitors & views, we should be looking at how to better serve those people and measuring success based off of that.

If you have any questions just let me know!

That's great! I'd love to see more ways to interact with and encourage growth in our communities. There are so many factors and variables to take into account, but I'd like to investigate some of the underlying principles in building a successful community. I'd imagine some of the fundamentals are shared across all types of communities.

Looks like a great idea for a topic, I know about 30 business owners who are really struggling with how to make this work. These days it is a serious competitive advantage to have a strong web presence as so many people use it to get information about where to make a purchase.

This is certainly something all of our clients are interested in. Deploying metrics like these as a service to these clients is something we are looking into.

I think this could be a very productive panel.

Thanks guys for the additional feedback. This is becoming more important as social networking migrates over into the business world. Being able to define success for your community is one of the big keys - if you don't know what you're trying to build its hard to know if its building value for your company and the people using the site.

This is THE topic to get straight answers on and Miles Sims has the background and experience to bring the 'real deal' to SXSW audiences. I'm going to be there - in the front row.

Sounds like ya'll are really targeting an important need for both the clients and end users. Looking forward to a great discussion.
on 26/8/08
Thanks Tom & Wade!

I think focusing on what your company is bringing to the table is harder for people to look at but ties directly to the real value of the community.

Hopefully it will be a fun panel!

The lack of any uniformity of metrics across communities is the #1 problem in how social media is being communicated to the CXO level of major companies. I can't wait to see people talk about some benchmarks and bring us out of the "art" phase and solidly into the "science".

Metrics are so important and a frank discussion on the good the bad and the ugly would be much appreciated.
