Title:

Who Will Check My Email After I Die?

Your vote:
Yes No
Organizer:
John Romano, Capstrat
Description:
Ever wondered what will happen to your digital existence after you die? E-mail, domain names, social networking content - do you want to leave it behind, "€œbequeath"€ it, or delete it? This in-depth discussion will provide technical, philosophical and legal insights on how to articulate your final online wishes.
Questions
Answered:
  1. How can I decide what should be done with my social network profiles and other digital assets?
  2. How can I ensure sensitive information is deleted or transferred to the correct person?
  3. Can I leave my domain name in my will?
  4. Whom should I select to execute my digital estate?
  5. How can I inform my online friends of my death and share with them my final messages?
  6. Can I protect my digital identity from destruction by my descendants or others?
  7. Can I transfer my iTunes purchases to somebody else?
  8. How can I keep my dirty laundry out of my obituary?
  9. Is there a service that can help with this?
  10. How can I be sure that big companies (like Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft) will respect my wishes?

I have thought about this before, not only for myself, but for others who have already died, such as blogger Marc Orchant who died in December of 2007. Those who have died and were active online actually live on through the digital existence that they built while alive. I don't think that most people think about this, especially in America where the topic of death is just not something that is embraced. I think it's a great topic idea and I'm looking forward to the discussion.

There's a few articles over on the Capstrat Blog, where we begin to talk about some of these issues. Feel free to check them out.

Interesting topic.. when our members die their "friends" usually insist that their profile and recipes stay up. We actually have a member who is currently facing the end and all of her friends have stressed to us that they don't want to lose her recipes. It's actually quite sweet and sad especially when they are a popular member.

Here's a quick update. There’s a new service called Dead Man’s Switch (http://www.deadmansswitch.net/) that allows you to set up e-mails to be sent after your death. We’ve contacted the creator, Stavros Korokithakis, and he is interested sitting on the panel, if it is selected.

I saw that IxDA was discussing this as well. It seems that it is prime time to talk about the digital afterlife.

Umm...interesting thought. I think no one is gonna check my email after I die. However, if you or your dead is mystery enough, maybe, some FBI guys will wanna look out your inbox.
