Description The notion of robot servants is still probably far fetched to most of us. However we are already surrounded by little machine helpers. They touch on almost every part of our lives. Some are big and obvious (like a laptop) and others are so small or discreet that they are ignored to the point of invisibility (like an oyster or tube card reader). The more these little helpers are connected to the network the more powerful their roles become. At the same time the less visible they can become, seamlessly transmitting our requests, making payments on our behalf, all the while our lives become more a little bit more ubiquitous in our day to day activities. A comparison with today and the near future of increasingly networked objects, in contrast with servant culture in Victorian England. Then looking ahead to the thoughts of sci-fi robot servants of the future. What would these networked objects gossip about when they communicate with one another on our behalf? As designers, what ethics, responsibility and privacy should we embed within these connected systems? This talk looks to explore the culture and interactions surrounding these little helpers. With a view to exposing just how saturated our lives and everyday interactions are with technological helpers. The impact they have on our lives both positively and negatively and if things continue as they are where we might end up in the future with our robot servants?
