Description:
Social networks are walled gardens. Even if you can see content, you can't add people as friends from other networks, or keep track of their content in open, generic ways beyond RSS. Or can you? We'll give you tools to connect your site or application to the social cloud today.

We'll be looking at the complete range of decentralized social networking ideas out there, including the DiSo project, our own OpenDD and the ideas espoused by the Open Web Foundation and DataPortability.org.

InfoWorld recently named Elgg the best open source social networking platform as part of their Best Of Open Source Software Awards. It originally launched in 2004, and powers sites across the spectrum of possibilities, from non-profits through to commercial sites. The world's first campus-wide university social network, at the University of Brighton, has been running Elgg since 2006.

I'm the technical lead and a co-founder of the project.
