Title:

Your Brand is Not My Friend™

Your vote:
Level:
Beginner
Type:
Panel
Category:
Advertising / Marketing
Organizer:
Alan (The Tangerine Toad) Wolk, The Toad Stool
Description:
People generally don’t want to hear from brands on Facebook and MySpace. The whole appeal of social media sites is their independence from corporate advertisers. People like the fact that they can say whatever they want to other people without any interference from anyone or anything that seems "official."

Understanding the relationship (or friending) between consumers and brands is crucial in today's social web. I can't wait to get guidance and learn best practices.
on 8/8/08
"Your Brand Is Not My Friend" is all about the critical mistake too many brands make when entering the social media space. They assume that every brand has the following of a Nike or an Apple. But those two brands, and no more than a dozen others, are "Prom King Brands" who have a unique and unusual relationship with their customers

The panel will discuss this and what to do if you are one of the 99% of brands out there who are not one Prom King Brand. We'll also touch on The Real Digital Revolution (the ability of consumers to research products online and how this shifts the focus of advertising.)

You can read the latest iteration of "Your Brand Is Not My Friend" in this Adweek article from June 2008: http://is.gd/FDj

The Toad Stool blog- where these and other theories are explained in detail can be found at www.toadstoolblog.com

Adweek's Brian Morrissey has agreed to be the moderator for the panel.

i'm a big believer in this concept, and word has it alan is great on stage. plus, could there be a moderator better placed to prod and provoke than brian morrissey? this one is a must see.

Brands need to figure out how to engage in social networks. And how not to. This should help.

I have a feeling this will cause a ton of good debate...

Much needed session.

This is going to be an awesome panel. Thanks for wrangling it, Alan!
on 20/8/08
This is super smart subject to be talking about and an all star line up for the panel. Brands can do nothing but gain from this discussion. A+++
on 22/8/08
Love this topic. Advertisers and some social nets need to realize that there's a very narrow pathway between being useful to consumers and completely annoying. Unfortunately, I think it's a level of nuance that most won't get.
on 25/8/08
This is going to be Great!
on 25/8/08
